07 Apr A Guide to Including QR Codes on Printed Documents
If you’ve never used QR codes before, they are a Quick Response code that is created from a matrix barcode. Customers can use their smartphone camera or an app to scan the QR code. They will then be sent to a specific website or webpage. Here’s a simple guide to effectively using QR codes on your company’s printed documents.
Use a Direct Link When Creating a QR Code
The purpose of a QR code is to make it easier for customers to get to a specific web page or post without needing to type out a lengthy URL on print media. To make it as easy for customers as possible (and minimize frustration) use a direct link that leads to a landing page that is optimized for mobile.
Use a Dynamic QR Code
A static QR code pattern looks much more dense on printed media, and it takes longer for the customer to scan it. A dynamic QR code uses a shortened URL and is easier for customers to scan.
Don’t Invert the Colors on the QR Code
Scanners can’t read QR codes with inverted colors. Make sure the background of your QR code is lighter than the foreground, and don’t use more than two colors.
Include a Call to Action
Tell your customers what will happen when they scan the QR code, or they won’t bother to use it at all. Make your call to action short and specific. For instance, “Scan this code for a discount,” or “Book an appointment now.”
Do a Test Scan
Always test your code before and after printing your first document. You don’t want to print 500 postcards and find out the QR code doesn’t work.
Use the Right Format
Your QR code should either be an SVG or PNG format. For media posts, use a PNG format. For printed media, use an SVG format.
Optimize the Placement
If you’re creating a sign or poster, the QR code should be at eye level. For brochures, fliers, postcards, and other printed materials, palace it in the center of the page, the cover, or the lower right side.
Pick the Right Size
The size of the QR code affects how easy it is to scan. You’ll want to ask your printing company what size they recommend based on the media you’re printing.
